kasemahl birch water detox

In our last post we wrote about toxicity and some basic principles how to cleanse your body. In this post we will give you 10 simple steps that will allow you to detoxify. Our organs need to be cleansed in order to work efficiently and without detriment. While our body already has a natural detoxifying system, your body will thank you if you give a little extra input from your side to help.

How to start?

Firstly, please make sure that you do have a clear understanding of detoxing before you decide to go ahead with it; it is most definitely not a weight loss program even though weight loss may occur in the process. Have a little more read around if you wish but most importantly keep your critical thinking mindset – detoxing should never require any extreme methods that are in any way harmful towards Your body! Remember: it is all about being more healthy and happy in the long term, so try to find adjustments which you can follow in the long run as well.

Listen to your body!

Learn to make a difference between a real hunger and an emotional hunger. Do you have a health issue you want to tackle? Identify it first: for example if you have a problematic skin (acne) then analyise your diet in depth and find out the what may cause it and why? Start by eliminating one thing at a time to find out how different foods influence your health. Perhaps your body is trying to tell you something but you are not listening? You can make a list of different kinds of matters you wish to address and take a little step at the time to resolve these. Nothing can be done overnight so therefore, be patient with yourself. Linda Page, N.D., Ph.D., the author of Healthy Healing’s Detoxification (2008) suggests detoxing for following symtops: unexplained fatigue, sluggish elimination, irritated skin, allergies, low-grade infection, puffy eyes or bags under the eyes, bloating, menstrual problems, mental confusion.

List your everyday toxins and start to eliminate them

List your toxins and start eliminating these from your everyday diet. At all times, be terminated to achieve your goal – push yourself to the limit and don’t quit when limits push you back. But remember, with detoxyfying you don’t have to starve yourself nor should you! You should simply adjust your eating habits to help your body eliminate toxins in the long term. Detoxification is already a natural part of your body where different major organs such as liver, skin, kidneys, lymph system, lungs neutralize and process toxins on a daily basis to cleanse your body. Your body goes through this process in order to maintain a good health. But as the number of toxins in the environment is more than ever and keeps continuously increasing, then your organs cannot cope alone anymore – they need your conscious help to cleanse your body.

How long should you detox?

First, set a time period for yourself during which you will follow a new set of eating, exercising and resting/relaxing habits. For example, take a 10-day-challenge during which you say ‘no’ to alcohol, coffee, cigarettes, refined sugars and saturated fats in your diet. But it should not stop there because in the long term it is necessary for you to find a balanced and healthy diet, which supports your body in its natural detoxing.

You should also find out more about the health care products and household cleaners that you use. Are they actually so beneficial to you as it says on the tin? Are there better natural alternatives out there? Overall, try to minimize the use of chemical-based products in your everyday life.

Make sure that you stress is balanced as this is another essential puzzle piece of a good health. While right amount of stress releaeses stress hormones into your system that can provide positive results, such as having ‘adrenaline rush’ to win something or meet a deadline, but having large amoungs of stress hormones can harm you by creatin toxins and slowying down the natural detoxification enzymes in liver.

So, how to cope with stress?

Firstly, identify the stress: does it have a good or bad effect on You? It is imporant to learn how to stay balanced rather then getting used to being unbalanced and reasoning just with the fact that ‘This is life’. No, negativity never benefits you!  The key is to find a way how to relieve stress that suits you! Think of what do you enjoy doing or what makes you happy? Perhaps you find yourself relaxing through practising Yoga, meditating, listening to your favourite music or watching your favourite comedian show. No matter what it is, find out what it is and integrate it into your daily routine!

Start today!

Make a plan and create a challenge to make it interesting for yourself. The refreshed feeling you will have after the challenge will be a great reward for yourself! Detoxing allows you to reset and unhook yourself from the addictive powers of sugar, flour and other over-processed food-like substances. It removes toxins and pollutions in your body and will leave you feeling more refreshed and rejuvenated.

By following these simple steps, you are on your way to a more healthier and happier YOU!

  • Drink plenty of clean water
You should drink at least 8-10 glasses of water per day!
  • Keep your bowels moving at least once or twice a day.
If you can’t go, 2 tbsp of ground flaxseeds can help you along the way.
  • Have a source of probiotics in your diet.
You can get probiotics from fermented foods, such as Sauerkraut, Kimchi, Tempeh and fermented birch water.
  • Focus on organic produce and high quality animal products.
During your detox phase it is recommended to eliminate meat products from your diet. However, if you find that difficult, choose wild fatty fish or pick an organic, grass fed meat. If you do decide to eat meat, include it in your lunch so that your body has enough time to digest and work through it.
  • Eat healthy fats
Healthy fats like avocados, olive oil, wild fatty fish, nuts and seeds, coconut oil are good for your heart and keep you from having carvings.
  • Eat detoxifying foods
You should eat at least 8-10 servings of colorful fruits and veggies a day. Particularly those in garlic family and in broccoli family like kale, cauliflower, brussel sprouts etc.
  • Limit your flour and sugar intake!
Sugar is 8x more addictive than cocaine! A study reported in JAMA (Aug 2005) suggests that a woman who consumes just one can of a soft drink a day is 83% more likely to acquire diabetes than a woman who has less than one such beverage a month. If you find it difficult to only drink water, pick a healthier alternative to conventional soft drinks which have less sugars and more nutritional value.
  • Minimise drugs, stimulants and sedatives
Stimulants like caffeine and nicotine cause over-acidification of the blood and tissues which allows for a terrain that is conductive to the growth of virus, bacteria, yeast and fungus.
  • Get exercise!
Keep yourself moving, whether its a long walk in a park or a real workout session, try to get at least 10 000 steps a day.  It is easy to track your steps with a built-in step-counter in your smartphone! If you don’t have an app to count your steps then you can download Argus – Health and Calorie Counter for free. This is our favorite to use on a daily basis.
  • Sweat at least 3x a week!
Get that sweat out! Our skin is the largest organ in our body and sweating helps to eliminate toxins. Exercises like jogging, hot yoga and a spinning class will make you sweat, for sure! But sweating doesn’t always have to come with exercise, Sauna is also a great idea. In Estonia Saturday is sauna-day and will always get your dripping, guaranteed!

Are you ready to discover healthier and happier you?
